A wide native ISO range of 100-51,200—expandable to 50-204,800—increases the camera’s performance in fast-changing light situations. Continuous shooting of 7 fps, and up to 12 fps in Live View, captures images in RAW or JPEG. The D780 also features 20 unique Creative Picture Control settings, which can be applied to photos and videos, and are easily previewed in real-time. Six of the 10 special effects modes also simultaneously save unaffected RAW images.

The primary 51-point AF system in the Nikon D780 provides quick, accurate focusing. In Live View, the 273-point AF uses advanced eye-detection technology to maintain focus while tracking quickly moving subjects. Nikon’s proprietary Scene Recognition System with 3D Color Matrix Metering III uses a 180k-pixel RGB sensor to quickly and accurately evaluate brightness, contrast and color to determine exposure and white balance settings for ideal imagery.
