Carefully refined optics, including Super Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens elements, significantly reduce the size and the weight of the lens, without sacrificing quality. Reduction in weight of the Image Stabilizer unit also helps contribute to the 25% (about 2.2 pounds) lighter lens. Designed for use even in inclement weather conditions, the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM features dust- and water-resistant seals around the mount, switches and rings, as well as a specially designed fluorine coating on its front and rear surfaces. A reformulated paint helps reflect heat from the sun, and a two-layer barrel structure helps minimize thermal effects on the lens elements.

Precision focusing

The Ultrasonic Motor (USM) in the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM delivers quick, quiet autofocus performance, while a full-time manual focus override is also available. The lens also features a customizable electronic manual focusing ring with three sensitivity levels for different shooting scenarios, as well as two focus presets.
