Description
The Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera is a compact and versatile tool that combines the innovative features of Sony's Cinema Line, the high-quality still-image rendering of the α-series, and advancements in AI-based recognition technology. Designed for ambitious content creators, this camera is powered by a potent combination of the latest 26.0MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor. Despite its powerful capabilities, the a6700 is lighter than its predecessor, making it a mobile and reliable option for multitasking creatives.
26.0MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor
The advanced imaging system of the Sony a6700 revolves around its 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor, which were first introduced in the FX30 Digital Cinema Camera. This combination enables the camera to deliver exceptional 10-bit UHD 4K imagery at up to 120 fps or achieve a top continuous shooting rate of 11 fps with autofocus and auto exposure. Burst shooting allows capturing up to 59 compressed raw still images in quick succession. The back-illuminated structure of the sensor boosts its resolution while maintaining high sensitivity. With an ISO range of 100-32000, expandable to ISO50-102400 for stills, the camera excels in low-light performance with minimal noise and offers more than 14 stops of dynamic range.
Cinematic Video in UHD 4K
Alongside its impressive sensor and processor, the Sony a6700 inherits a robust set of professional video features from the Cinema Line series, bringing them within reach of everyday content creators and aspiring filmmakers. The camera achieves high-quality UHD 4K video through full pixel readout from its 6K sensor, capturing approximately 2.4x the data required for 4K video, effectively minimizing moiré and aliasing. It supports UHD 4K recording at frame rates up to 120p and full HD recording up to 240p, utilizing full 1:1 pixel readout without binning. Advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats enable recording in 10-bit 4:2:2, delivering consistent performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mb/s. The camera can record more than two hours of 4K 30p footage or over 40 minutes of 4K 60p footage on a 128GB card.
The Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode allows for capturing 4K video at varying frame rates between 1-120 fps and Full HD video between 1-240 fps, offering the flexibility to slow down or speed up the action as needed. The S-Cinetone color profile, derived from Sony's professional Cinema Line cameras like the VENICE, ensures distinctive colors and natural-looking skin tone rendering. The S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine Gamma Curves provide more than 14 stops of dynamic range, allowing for increased post-production flexibility and seamless integration with video from other Sony Cinema Line cameras.
Creative Looks can be applied during recording to establish a specific mood, reducing the need for extensive editing. Users can also create and apply their own LUTs and presets for accurate monitoring and previewing of footage on the camera's monitor, EVF, or HDMI output. The camera's AI Processing Unit contributes to efficient subject recognition and tracking during video recording, offering adjustments for tracking speed and sensitivity, auto-cropping to focus on a subject, touch-adjustment of the tracked subject, and customized framing location.
AI-Powered Autofocus and Image Stabilization
The a6700 incorporates a pixel-level 5-axis optical image stabilization system, compensating for five types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of both stills and video. This system is algorithmically optimized for precise detection and control down to a single pixel. The AI Processing Unit further enhances communication between the camera body and the lens, ensuring more stable framing before shooting. As a result, users can confidently use any lens, including adapted lenses, without experiencing blur caused by camera shake.
Advanced Rendering
For still photography enthusiasts, the a6700 offers a wide range of color renderings and compression options to optimize image quality and storage management. It introduces the High Efficiency Image File format in both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 options. Users can choose between Compressed and Lossless Compressed options when shooting in raw format. The AI Processing Unit improves exposure results in Auto mode, providing a 20% increase in reliability compared to the a6600, according to manufacturer testing. It makes algorithmic adjustments for skin tone, backlit situations, and white balance. The camera also features Creative Looks presets for stills, allowing users to apply various pre-defined configurations with eight adjustable parameters. When tethered to compatible monitors and televisions, the a6700 offers a stills-oriented Hybrid Log-Gamma mode, delivering accurate dynamic range for optimal viewing of still images.
